Did you like YA crime fiction when you were growing up?
Yes! Every novel has to have mystery in order to be interesting. Whether Dickens can be seen as a suspense writer is debatable but I remember vividly reading Great Expectations and the characters of Magwitch and Miss Havisham and their mysterious motives coming to life. I also loved Fowles' The Magus which is hard to beat in terms of a mystery - even if it doesn't resolve satisfactorily IMO!
What was the first story in that genre that you wrote?
The Murder Boys!
What is your favorite part of writing in this genre?
Resolving the puzzle in your mind while still keeping a sense of wonder and that anything could happen in your reader’s mind.
What do you find most difficult about writing in this genre?
